We promote a variety of services to help our patients avoid getting ill in the first place by leading a healthy lifestyle. Doing this, having the recommended vaccinations and partaking in the screening programmes will reduce many long term conditions significantly.
PRESCRIPTION FOR EXERCISE (ACTIVE HEALTH). As part of a healthy living programme the doctors are able to refer you for a course of exercise at a local sports centre (Tisbury, Shaftesbury or Salisbury) at a subsidised rate. You will need to make an appointment with the nurse for a health assessment and referral to www.activewiltshire.org.uk who will contact you.
We encourage all our patients to take at least thirty minutes of exercise five times a week. This will reduce your chance of getting ischaemic heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, colon cancer and osteoporosis.
SMOKE CESSATION. Our doctors and practice nurses are all trained smoke cessation counsellors. We provide individualised help to any patient who wishes to stop smoking. This includes explanation, support, carbon monoxide monitoring and prescription of nicotine replacement, Zyban or Champix as needed. A practice leaflet about the service is available. The PCT smoke cessation service is available on 01980 626159 or national helpline on 0800 169 0169. 12.5% of our patients smoke (Wiltshire average 21%)
WEIGHT REDUCTION PROGRAMMES (Weight Watchers or Slimming World). We are able to refer suitable and well motivated patients who want to lose weight to a free 12 week course with one of these organisations.
HEALTH TRAINER Our Health Trainer (Caiti Buck) can help you to improve your health and make positive lifestyle changes. She is available at a drop-in centre at Tisbury Leisure Centre on Tuesdays between 10.00am and 12.00 noon. She can be contacted on 0300 003 4566.
