Salisbury Walk In NHS 111

NHS 111

NHS 111 is a service which makes it easier for you to access local NHS healthcare services in England. You can call 111 when you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency. NHS 111 is a fast and easy way to get the right help, whatever the time.

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free from landlines and mobile phones.

When to use it:

You should use the NHS 111 service if you urgently need medical help or advice outside normal surgery hours, or if you are away from the practice area but it's not a life-threatening situation.

Call 111 if:

How does it work?

The NHS 111 service is staffed by a team of fully trained advisers, supported by experienced nurses and paramedics.  They will ask you questions to assess your symptoms, then give you the healthcare advice you need or direct you straightaway to the local service that can help you best.  That could be A&E, an out-of-hours doctor, an urgent care centre or a walk-in centre, a community nurse, an emergency dentist or a late-opening chemist.

Where possible, the NHS 111 team will book you an appointment or transfer you directly to the people you need to speak to.

If NHS 111 advisers think you need an ambulance, they will immediately arrange for one to be sent to you.

Calls to 111 are recorded. All calls and the records created are maintained securely, and will only be shared with others directly involved with your care.

  • You need medical help fast but it's not a 999 emergency

  • You think you need to go to A&E or need another NHS urgent care service

  • You don't know who to call or you don't have a GP to call you need health information or reassurance about what to do next

  • For less urgent health needs, contact your GP or local pharmacist in the usual way

  • You should always ring the surgery number (01747 820222) as this automatically transfers you to the right recipient (Hindon Surgery reception when we are open, the duty Hindon GP or the 111 service).  Ringing the surgery number means you will avoid contacting 111 when we are open and able to deal with your problem (with immediate access to your own GP who won’t have to go through a string of questions as they will probably know you and will have access to your notes).

  • For immediate, life-threatening emergencies, continue to call 999

Outside the surgery hours (from 18.30 in the evening, through the night up to 08.00 in the morning, weekends and Bank Holidays) the surgery is closed, and emergency cover is provided by Medvivo  with local treatment centres at Westminster Memorial Hospital in Shaftesbury, Salisbury District Hospital, Warminster and Amesbury. This service is commissioned by Wiltshire CCG.

Ring 01747 820222 (the surgery number) and your call will be automatically re-directed to 111 who triage all the emergency calls and direct the request to the right provider.

If Medvivo feel you need a face to face consultation they may not offer you the option to be seen at Westminster Memorial Hospital in Shaftesbury.  This is because they have many part-time staff and not all will know the special arrangement we have made to enable our patients to be seen closer to home.  In this situation please tell the Medvivo staff that you want to be seen in Shaftesbury and that this is something that is allowed.  If you have any problems please let the surgery know and we will discuss it with the Medical Director of Medvivo.

Hindon Surgery runs a Minor Injuries service in normal hours, but outside of these you can be seen at Westminster Memorial Hospital in Shaftesbury.

There is also a walk-in health centre at the Central Health Clinic, Avon Approach, Salisbury SP1 3SL (01722 331191, www.salisburywalkincentre.co.uk) open from 6.30pm - 10.00pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 8 pm at weekends and on Bank Holidays.
